Start with defense

If you are new to the game, do not rush straight into Issen. Use blocking to learn attack directions, then practice Parry and Deflect before combining dodges, Issen and Oni Armaments. CAPCOM describes the game as Swordplay Action: its Action page lists Issen, Oni Armaments and several sword techniques. Xbox Wire also presents blocking, Parry, Deflect and Issen as distinct defensive options.

When to use each defense

  • Block: Watch where an attack is coming from and reduce the risk while learning a new encounter.
  • Parry: Time it just before a sword attack lands to reduce enemy stamina and open a counterattack window.
  • Deflect: Use it against attacks that cannot be blocked directly, or to return some ranged attacks. Success substantially reduces enemy stamina.
  • Dodge and Reflex Dodge: Grabs and some punches or kicks are better avoided. Precise timing can trigger a counterattack.
  • Issen: Attack just before the enemy hits you. It is the riskiest option, but offers the greatest reward when successful; its effects differ between ordinary enemies and bosses.

Making use of the Oni Gauntlet

The Oni Gauntlet absorbs Genma souls. Official material identifies soul absorption and Oni Armaments as core abilities, while published reviews distinguish the uses of yellow, red and blue souls. Saving blue souls for Oni Armaments and healing resources for when you need them is more reliable than forcing skills into every fight.

A practical learning order

  1. Practice blocking ordinary enemies near a Spirit Mirror until you can read attack directions.
  2. Focus on Parry rather than combos. Your goal is to reduce enemy stamina.
  3. Switch to dodging when you see grabs or clear non-sword attacks, and watch for Reflex Dodge feedback.
  4. Try Issen once you can read the wind-up. If you miss the timing, create distance instead of repeatedly gambling on the same opening.
  5. Once you understand enemy stamina, use Oni Armaments to finish fights and keep yellow souls available for recovery.

This is an editorial practice routine based on the verified mechanics, not an official walkthrough. Difficulty, enemy groups and later skills can change which option works best.
